Jim Brown, Managing Director, Round 8
I ran around in a tracksuit at Loughborough University, graduating with a Bsc in 1994. Like most people I really wasn't sure what I wanted to do. All I knew was that I wanted to work in Londonin a competitive, people-orientated job that paid well and rewarded me based on how much work I put in. Marketing, PR and Media all sounded good, but I didn't know much about them.
So to be honest I pretty much fell into media, initially joining a telesales team at The Builder Group PLC, (a business publisher, now part of CMP Media.) I spent 3 years there and ended up running a field sales-team on a weekly property magazine. Then I ran thesales and buying arm of a merchandising business, Incentive Group as their national sales manager. After a year there, I hooked up with two ex-colleagues at a new media recruitment company, FS Media where I launched their graduate recruitment division. Sixteen months into that (2000) I left to launch round8. We help media businesses of all sizes to find commercial people - from trainee to board level. We work across all mediums and our clients include MSN, BBC Worldwide, Virgin Radio, and Associated Newspapers.
Given half a chance I think I'd still be at Loughborough in a tracksuit but, at 37, I expect that campus security would have me ejected.

James Layfield founded The Lounge Group (Opens a new browser window) with his business partner, Sara Gil, after years of been disappointed by the UK's Yoof agency's. Unlike the competition this is not done through having a cool hair cut and a fancy pair of jeans but by a genuine connection with the target audience through The Lounge's network's of 18-30's and Influencers.
The Lounge have been responsible for creating some of the most innovative marketing campaigns in the youth market. These have included work with Samsung and Dirty Pretty Things, EA, Disney, Miller Beer, and Southern Comfort.
James honed his entrepreneurial flare with Branson becoming one Virgin's youngest ever MD's at 29. Whilst at Virgin James was instrumental in the launch of a number of youth focused media properties. These included Virginstudent.com, then the UK's largest student website, Dave (the first national student magazine).
Prior to Virgin James was a youth specialist for MGOMD, part of the Omnicom group of companies. As Associate Director he developed campaigns for Absolut Vodka, Sony Music, Playstation and Virgin. Over the years he has worked on many famous campaigns including the launch of Wonderbra, Pretty Polly tights, and working with EMI - Robbie Williams.
When he is not Lounging James is on the board of patrons for Martin Firrell, a leading public artist, a strategic advisor for Kikass, a youth charity group, and runs two other companies - Escape Airports Ltd in New York and Unltd a new type of company with an innovative approach to the record industry.
James Layfield is 33, he lives and works in London.
